On 20 June 2020, a Clean City — Israel event took place in Hadar.

This was not quite an ordinary clean-up. First, we tidied Binyamin Park on Nordau Street, then went to 94-96-98 Herzl Street at the request of the residents of those buildings.

We were confronted by an appalling sight: the ground around the buildings was covered in a thick layer of household rubbish; behind them were piles of rubbish mixed with broken trees and furniture. On the lower street, overlooked by the windows of these three buildings, there was a heap of rubbish which, as we later learned, one resident had carried out while clearing the accumulated waste beneath the windows.

We spoke with residents who have long been trying to deal with the situation: complaining to the municipality and the police, and clearing away, on their own, rubbish that is regularly thrown out of their neighbours’ windows. We will publish the full story in a separate post, together with photographs and footage from surveillance cameras installed by Anna, a resident of building 96. Dor Moriah public organisation.
